Lutron HomeWorks vs. RadioRA 3: Which Lighting System Is Right for Your Home?

By Wadden Electric • 7 min read

Lutron makes the two best residential lighting control systems in the world: HomeWorks QSX and RadioRA 3. As a Lutron Gold dealer, Wadden Electric installs both regularly across Nova Scotia. They share the same DNA — precise dimming, elegant keypads, rock-solid reliability — but they're designed for different homes and different budgets.

Here's how to think about the choice.

RadioRA 3: The Smart Standard

RadioRA 3 is Lutron's latest wireless lighting control system. It uses Clear Connect Type X — Lutron's proprietary mesh wireless protocol — which means no new wiring is needed for switches and dimmers. That makes it ideal for renovations and existing homes, but it's also our default recommendation for most new builds under $2M.

Key features of RadioRA 3:

  • Wireless switches and dimmers — no dedicated control wiring required
  • Up to 200 devices per system — enough for most homes under 5,000 sq ft
  • Lutron seeTouch keypads for scene control
  • LEAP protocol integration with Control4 — seamless two-way control
  • Motorized shading support via Sivoia QS
  • Pico wireless remotes for table-side and bedside control

RadioRA 3 is the right choice when you want elegant lighting control, scene programming, and integration with Control4 — without the added infrastructure cost of a wired system.

HomeWorks QSX: The Flagship

HomeWorks QSX is Lutron's flagship system — purpose-built for luxury homes, estates, and projects where lighting is a design priority. It's a wired system, meaning every switch and keypad connects back to a processor. That adds upfront cost but delivers capabilities RadioRA 3 can't match.

What HomeWorks QSX adds over RadioRA 3:

  • Native Ketra support — full-spectrum tunable white lighting that shifts color temperature throughout the day to match your circadian rhythm
  • Lumaris fixtures — Lutron's premium architectural LED downlights with tunable white built in
  • Unlimited zone capacity — no device count ceiling
  • Palladiom keypads — Lutron's most refined hardware, available in custom finishes
  • Alisse keypads — glass-face designer keypads with engraved labels
  • Higher dimming precision — HomeWorks dims to a lower threshold with zero flicker

If your interior designer is specifying Ketra tunable lighting, if you want Palladiom keypads in a custom finish to match your hardware, or if your home exceeds 200 lighting zones — HomeWorks QSX is the system.

How We Decide: The Wadden Electric Framework

When we're scoping a project, here's the decision framework we use:

  • Home value under $2M, standard lighting fixtures: RadioRA 3
  • Home value $2M+, designer lighting, Ketra specified: HomeWorks QSX
  • Renovation or retrofit: RadioRA 3 (wireless advantage)
  • New build with budget for dedicated control wiring: Either — depends on lighting priorities
  • Interior designer involved, custom keypad finishes needed: HomeWorks QSX

Both Systems Integrate with Control4

Whether you choose RadioRA 3 or HomeWorks QSX, both integrate seamlessly with Control4 via LEAP protocol. Your "Good Morning" scene on a Control4 keypad triggers Lutron to set every light in the house to the right level. No compromises.
