Generator Installation

Whole-Home Standby Generators

Never lose power again. Automatic standby generators that detect outages and switch on in seconds — keeping your lights, heat, refrigeration, security, and smart home systems running without interruption.

Nova Scotia's Grid Reality

Post-tropical cyclones, ice storms, and nor'easters knock out power regularly. Some outages last hours. Some last days. Here's what's at stake.

3-5Major storms per year
10-72hrsTypical extended outage
$500+Spoiled food per event
0°CIndoor temp after 6hrs in winter

A standby generator doesn't just keep the lights on — it protects your food, your pipes, your security system, and your family's comfort.

Standby vs Portable Generators

Portable generators are fine for a campsite. Your home deserves better.

Portable Generator

Manual start in the dark. Extension cords through windows. 8-12 hour fuel tank. Carbon monoxide risk. Powers a few circuits at most. No smart home integration. You're babysitting a loud machine in the rain.

Transfer Switch + Portable

Better — a manual transfer switch lets you connect a portable generator to your panel. But you still need to start it, refuel it, and manage it manually. Limited capacity. No automation. No monitoring.

Whole-Home Standby

Automatic start within 10-30 seconds. Connected to natural gas or propane — unlimited runtime. Powers your entire home. Quiet operation. Control4 integration sends status notifications. Savant Power manages load priority. You might not even notice the outage happened.

Automatic Backup Power

A whole-home standby generator is permanently installed outside your home, connected to your natural gas or propane supply, and wired through an automatic transfer switch to your electrical panel. When grid power drops, the transfer switch detects it, signals the generator, and your home is back online in seconds — all without you lifting a finger.

When grid power returns, the system transfers back and the generator shuts down. Weekly self-test cycles keep the engine ready. OvrC cloud monitoring reports status to our team so we know your generator is healthy before the next storm — not after.

Automatic Transfer Switch

Detects outages instantly. Transfers your home to generator power within 10-30 seconds. No manual intervention required. CEC-compliant installation.

Natural Gas or Propane

Connected to your existing gas line or propane tank. No fuel cans, no refilling, no running to the gas station in a storm. Unlimited runtime on natural gas.

Quiet Operation

Modern standby generators run at 60-67 dB — quieter than a central air conditioner. Sound-attenuated enclosures keep noise minimal even at full load.

Weatherproof Enclosure

Aluminum enclosures rated for Nova Scotia's salt air, ice loads, and hurricane-force winds. Corrosion-resistant coating standard on all models.

Weekly Self-Test

Runs automatically once per week to keep the engine lubricated and battery charged. Configurable schedule so it never runs during dinner or bedtime.

OvrC Monitoring

Cloud-connected monitoring alerts our team to faults, low battery, or maintenance needs. We know your generator status before you do.

Generator Sizing Guide

Bigger isn't always better. We calculate your actual load to spec the right generator — protecting your home without overspending on capacity you'll never use.

14-16 kW — Essential Coverage

Covers HVAC, refrigeration, lighting, well pump, and security systems. Ideal for standard 3-bedroom homes with 200A service. Most popular residential size.

20-24 kW — Full Home

Powers everything including electric range, dryer, hot tub, and EV charger. Best for 4-5 bedroom homes with higher electrical demand. Load shedding optional but rarely needed.

30-48 kW — Luxury Estate

For large homes with multiple HVAC zones, pools, saunas, full smart home systems, and high electrical demand. Commercial-grade reliability for residential applications.

Load Calculation

We perform a CEC Section 8 load calculation on your panel to determine actual demand — not estimates. This prevents both undersizing (brown-outs) and oversizing (wasted money).

Intelligent Load Shedding

Not every circuit needs to run during an outage. Smart load shedding prioritizes what matters and sheds what doesn't — automatically, in real time.

Priority Circuits (Always On)

Security & cameras, networking equipment, HVAC, refrigeration, well pump, Control4 system, essential lighting. These circuits never shed — your home stays safe, comfortable, and intelligent.

Managed Circuits (Shed When Needed)

EV charger, pool heater, hot tub, secondary HVAC zones, electric dryer, oven. These loads pause during peak generator demand and resume automatically when capacity allows.

With Savant Power smart breakers, load shedding happens per-circuit, per-second — no manual intervention. Your generator runs efficiently without ever overloading.

Smart Home + Generator

Your Home Stays Intelligent

For smart home clients, a generator isn't just about keeping the lights on — it's about keeping every system online. Your Control4 system, Araknis network, Luma cameras, alarm system, and Sonos audio all stay running. The house remains intelligent, secure, and connected when the grid fails.

With Savant Power smart breakers, your generator and panel work together. Critical circuits — security, networking, HVAC, refrigeration — get priority power. Non-essential loads shed automatically until capacity allows. Control4 triggers a "Generator Active" scene: lights reduce to efficient levels, notifications hit your phone, and the system logs the event.

Control4 "Generator Active" Scene

Automatic scene fires when generator starts: adjusts lighting to reduce load, sends push notification to your phone, pauses non-critical automations, and logs the outage event with timestamp.

Savant Load Priority

Smart breakers prioritize circuits in real-time. Security, networking, HVAC, and refrigeration hold priority. EV charger, pool heater, and secondary loads shed until capacity frees up.

Security Stays Online

Cameras keep recording, alarm stays armed, access control stays functional. Your home security doesn't have a gap during outages — ever.

How Generator Installation Works

From site assessment to final commissioning — here's what to expect.

1

Site Assessment

We assess your panel, calculate your load per CEC Section 8, determine generator size, evaluate placement options for setback compliance, and check gas supply availability.

2

Quote & Permits

Fixed-price quote with equipment, installation, transfer switch, and concrete pad. We handle the electrical permit and NSPI coordination. Gas line work coordinated with a licensed gas fitter.

3

Installation

Concrete pad poured (or composite pad placed), generator set, gas line connected, transfer switch installed at your panel, and all wiring completed. Typically 1-2 days of on-site work.

4

Commissioning & Integration

Full load test under simulated outage. Transfer test verified. Smart home integration configured — Control4 scenes, Savant load priority, OvrC monitoring. We walk you through everything.

Permits & Code Compliance

Generator installations require electrical permits, NSPI coordination, and CEC compliance. We handle all of it.

Electrical Permit

Filed with Nova Scotia's electrical inspection authority. Required for all transfer switch and generator connections. We manage the application and schedule the inspection.

NSPI Coordination

Nova Scotia Power must be notified of generator installations. We handle interconnection requirements and ensure your installation meets NSPI standards.

CEC Compliance

All installations meet Canadian Electrical Code 26th Edition requirements for emergency and standby power — Section 46 for transfer equipment, proper grounding, and conductor sizing.

Setback Requirements

Generators must meet municipal setback distances from property lines, windows, and air intakes. We site the unit during assessment to ensure compliance before installation day.
